2023 National Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) for nuclear medicine

HIQA has published the 2023 National Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs) for nuclear medicine. These national DRLs broadly align with previously established DRLs and for the first time, national DRLs were established for CT hybrid imaging. HIQA have established 18 national DRLs for adult and paediatric nuclear medicine procedures after completing a survey of 24 medical facilities providing this service in Ireland. It was found that over the course of 2022, there were 39,767 diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures performed. All 38 pieces of equipment used for nuclear medicine in Ireland were reviewed and it was found that over half were over 10 years old.
